Looking at the source material for the inspiration of this font – popular headlines calligraphy used in newspapers and posters in the Middle East during the 60-80s – one can immediately feel the impact of the letterforms. These letters are graphic, bold, thick. These letters have weight.

Our font conveys a similar bold, energetic, and expressive, vibrant spirit but we also aspired to improve the utility. To better meet diverse design requirements, we expanded the weight and proportions range. But instead of becoming bolder all around, the heavier weights increase in contrast along the baseline stroke. This provides a wider range of thickness from what is commonly seen in historical examples, increasing the font usability.

We also introduced many fine contemporary typographic details and included options to allow a designer to further emphasize the bold and horizontal baseline by replacing the curved ends of certain letters with flat ends.

Sakkal Saad named in honor of Dr. Sakkal’s older brother, ‘saad’ meaning ‘felicity/fortune’, is drawn in a contemporary fashion while managing to seamlessly marry heritage with present-day aesthetics. The calligraphic mastery and skill of the friendly letter-forms has been beautifully carried into the digital fonts with notable grace and ease.

This is the companion font to our award winning Sakkal Saad text typeface. It is designed in collaboration with Aida Sakkal in 2023 for release in 2024. The font has over 3,000 glyphs. The current version is a new release offered to the public for the first time through Sakkal.com and a select number of distributors.

Sakkal Saad is available in six weights. With four lengths of swashes, including a compact version for tight spaces, options for inserting three widths of Kashidas to whole paragraphs or documents, unlimited expansion with Kashida and special end pieces, and the choice to increase or decrease the space width, it provides a wealth of options for text justification and graceful compositions.

The typeface family received the prestigious Type Directors Club (TDC) Certificate of Typographic Excellence award in the 2024 competition, and its companion text typeface “Sakkal Saad” received the same award in 2023.
